The website may want to be updated with the "M2V" file extension added to the list.
I played a M2V file from start to finish.

This is what works for me so far

DVD-r, DVD+R, DVD+RW, i don't use DVD-RW

working to date
files with .divx or .avi extensions
DivX with ac3
files compressed with drdivx and XMpeg

andw 16/2/2004: Multi-session discs
-------------------------------------------------
I have used DVD-RW and also CD-R, CD-RW with no problems
WARNING - with MULTI-SESSION on DVD-or+R, the XMS-888 only sees the first session,
multisession works fine with DVD+or-RW, as well as CD-RW and CD-R)

I bought an xms-888 today. I just wanted to let you know that it plays DVD-RW. I burned a test DVD using an Imation DVD-RW. I thought I'd let you know, so that you can update the "working disc formats" section on your website.

---------------------------------------------------
Me:
---------------------------------------------------
I have used CD-R's (80/90/99 minute), CD-RW's XVid codec and DVDx.

27th Jan 2004 - no 3iVX support - pressing OSD on remote identifies the file as 3IV2, but when you go to play
it reports 'Codec Not Supported'
28th Jan 2004 - However, if you change the 4CC code on the file to XVid, it plays perfectly.

editors note : (28/07/04) This does not mean this player will play all of these formats, just that they were the extensions found in the firmware when skaman did a scan through it.

I wanted to see what features of mpeg-4 the player supported. I made some short test files that make use of various mpeg-4 features (all encoded with XviD). I only did a very brief test. These are just my findings from a few simple tests.

XMS-888 Supported Mpeg-4 Features:

I/P-Frames - Supported (obviously)
B-Frames - Supported (only tested with 1 consecutive BVOP)
GMC - Unsupported
Q-Pel - Unsupported

Considering my test results, DivX 5 users should use the "DivX Home Theatre" "DivX High Definition" profiles when encoding to ensure compatibility with the player. XviD users should ensure that GMC and Q-Pel are disabled when encoding, in order to ensure compatibility with the player.

....In relation to mpeg-4 ISO compliance, I made a short ISO compliant mp4 file (with aac audio + xvid encoded video) and renamed the extension from .mp4 to .avi before burning. However, it showed up as an unknown file in the smart-navi menu.

I did a testing of different formats from TestCD found on
www.dvdboard.de.
This CD (600 Mb) contains 1 min of fast motion video with J. Chang in the mountans. Camera moves very fast showing mountains around, moving water etc. There is a big transparent word "Muster" imposed over the movie with complicated edges. So it gets bad if the player can't decode properly
fine details.
There are files with two audostreams German/English. German is alright
in all of them, I don't know how to switch to English (if possible).
I've done that on a normal 68 cm TV.
Here are results:

Resolutions:
480x204 -
496x208 -
512x220 -
528x220 -
544x236 -
560x239 -
576x248 -
592x248 -
608x260 -
624x260 -
640x272 -
656x276 -
672x288 -
688x288 -
704x296 -
720x308
All are ok, with no left, right black borders. Some have the word "Muster"
shifted slightly to the right.

DivX3:
All 704x430, 16:9

fast3k-DivXTon.avi - Fast Motion 2649 kb/s, DivX Audio 64kb/s OK
fast3k.avi - Fast Motion 2649 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s OK
fast6k.avi - Fast Motion 2773 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s OK
low15k.avi - Low Motion 1610 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s Basically OK
There are problems on the borders of the word Muster

low3k-DivXTon.avi - Low Motion 3221 kb/s, DivX Audio 64kb/s OK
low3k.avi - Low Motion 3222 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s OK
low6k-320.avi - Low Motion 6025 kb/s, MP3 320kb/s OK

DivX5:
All 704x430, 16:9
1k-bf.avi - 1-pass 995 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s, BFrames OK
1k-gmc.avi - 1-pass 999 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s, GMC OK !
1k-qpel.avi - 1-pass 1018 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s, Quarter Pixel
Just skips this file, no error message on QPEL.

2pass15k.avi - 2-pass 2981 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s OK
2pass3k.avi - 2-pass 1503 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s OK
6k-320.avi - 1-pass 6378 kb/s, MP3 320kb/s
Video is slowing down on fast scenes, audio breaks

6k-gmc-bf-320.avi - 1-pass 6628 kb/s, MP3 320kb/s, GMC, Quarter Pixel
Sometimes Video is very slow and disappears for 1 sec in the middle,
Audio breaks. However, basically it's ok.
Just curious, will it be fine encoded with GMC and QPEL (both !) at low
bitrates ?

JPG:
1000.jpg 1000x666 Pixel OK
1500.jpg 1500x999 Pixel OK
2000.jpg 2000x1332 Pixel OK
4000.jpg 3967x2642 Pixel OK

Music:

Test-CBR-128.mp3 OK
Test-CBR-320.mp3 OK
Test-VBR.mp3 OK, so player can handle VBR with low bitrates.
Test.ac3 OK
Test.ogg does not show up in menu
Test.wma OK

Muxing:
1 Frame Interleave, 500ms Preload

avimux+ac3.avi
avimux+cbr.avi
avimux+vbr.avi
nandub+ac3.avi
nandub+cbr.avi
nandub+vbr.avi
vdub+ac3.avi
vdub+cbr.avi
vdub+vbr.avi
All look OK for me, I can't say much about possible small audio delays
because they speak in german.

Ton:
1 Frame Interleave, 500ms Preload

1xAC3-448.avi
1xCBR-MP3.avi
1xVBR+1xAC3.avi
1xVBR-MP3.avi
2xAC3-448.avi
2xCBR-MP3.avi
2xVBR-MP3.avi
All OK.
The first german audio stream is fine, I dont' know how to switch
to the second stream (if possilbe).

Xvid:
All 704x430, 16:9
1k-bf.avi - 1-pass 1032 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s, BFrames=3, OK
1k-gmc.avi - 1-pass 1038 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s, GMC not OK, skips
1k-qpel.avi - 1-pass 1039 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s, Quarter Pixel not OK, skips
2pass15k.avi - 2-pass 1617 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s OK
2pass3k.avi - 2-pass 3106 kb/s, MP3 128kb/s OK
6k-320.avi - 1-pass 5970 kb/s, MP3 320kb/s
after 15 sec a slideshow, but basically OK
6k-gmc-bf-320.avi - 1-pass 5894 kb/s, MP3 320kb/s, GMC, Quarter Pixel not OK, skips

Later that day -buts- Just checked that the high bitrate Divx5 described as GMC+Qpel doesn't
have QPEL, only B, GMC and I,P frames. Obviously it was a misprint on that
site where I copied it from. So I convinced now that all files with QPEL are not playable.

----------------------

Ed: The above formats were tested on a 68cm 4:3 'square' screen, different results will occur with screen resolutions on Wide Screen 16:9 screens. e.g. I have found that if something (avi) is say 640 wide x 352 down, it will have black borders left and right as well as top and bottom on a 16:9 screen. (576x432 on the other hand fits perfectly?!?)
Also, if an avi file is say 560x336, it will fit across the 16:9 screen ok, BUT the image is squashed along the Y axis (top to bottom),with black bars above and below it. It is a widescreen image, but the player outputs it as though it is for a 4:3 screen.
With Firmware 1.1, there is no way to change the aspect ratio (on avi files) so a widescreen avi fits a widescreen TV correctly. (hopefully ver 1.2 will fix this)

I have found that music mp3s burnt on to DVDs play just as well as on CDs.
I tested this with about 2.5GB worth of mp3s on a DVD+RW disc.
No skipping at all (inner or outer tracks).

Also found that XMS will play DVDs burnt using ISO or UDF format.

Also reported strong possibility that files greater than 2GB not supported. (divx 5.1.1 file).
